Some people build winning teams. Others build lasting relationships, shape lives and create legacies that stretch far beyond the game. Sandhills Community College (SCC) men's golf coach Gus Ulrich does it all.
Ulrich is a true treasure to Sandhills Community College and the golf community as a whole, as demonstrated at the recent SCC Night of Champions event. Ulrich was celebrated at the USGA's World Golf Hall of Fame facility for his remarkable career to date.
“What made the evening so special wasn't just celebrating championships, but the incredible group of people who came together to honor one man,” said Tito Ward, athletic director at SCC. “Past and present college presidents, community leaders, board members, Friends of the Flyers, former student-athletes dating back to the SCC Spartans of the 1970s and 1980s, representatives from championship teams, and members of our current golf team all attended to share in celebration of a remarkable man.”
Beyond his extraordinary personal accomplishments in golf, Ulrich has built a Hall of Fame coaching career at Sandhills Community College. With seven NJCAA national championships (2014, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026), including six consecutive national titles, he has established a remarkable standard of excellence.
This year's Flyers golf team is already showing the talent, determination and championship mindset to continue the SCC golf dynasty he has built.
“The evening reminded us that while championship trophies, rings, and banners tell the story of success, the people who filled the room tell the story of a legacy,” said Ward. “We are incredibly fortunate to have Gus as part of our Flyers family.”
